Running Accomplishments:

I have completed the Race for the Cure 5K, Salt Lake City 5K, Heart of Holladay 5K, Deseret News 10K, Provo River 1/2 2006, Top of Utah Marathon 2005, St. George Marathon 2006.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Hopefully, I will lose all of the weight that resulted from having two children within two years (the last 10-15 lbs. are a pain to drop).

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would like to keep improving my times and run each race better than the last one.  I want to keep pushing my body and see how far I can go (without ending up with titanium knees by the time I'm 50).

Personal:

I am married to a great guy.  Running and being active is a big part of our lifestyle.  We typically take our children hiking at least once a week.  Most of the time, I can be seen around the City pushing my two kids in their BOB double-jogger, trying to get a few miles in.

Although I felt great after the race was over, I din't run a smart race.  I ran the first three miles about forty-five seconds per mile faster than I should have (the temptation to run too fast downhill was too great).  I paid dearly during the last mile and 1/2.  I am planning to on running a much smarter race next year.  This is the first 10k I've participated in since my daughter was born.  It is great to see where I am at and start building from there.  Overall, great course and awesome crowd support during the last couple of miles.  I am definitely running this race again.

Nice work! 1 hour flat for a 10K is impressive! Awesome- keep it up - and welcome!

From Brent on Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 22:27:17

Welcome to the blog, I see you already know the running game, have the heart for dedication, getting your running groove back. Hey, you did not mention your PRs? From you time at the 10K, you are likely much faster when not eating dwarfs.

Stay Kool, Dwarfs are fattening, B of BS Rools out

From Plodding Hippo on Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 00:18:46

Thanks for the welcome!!! I have been logging my runs in a log book for a few months now. After hovering over my husband while he logged his runs on this site, I decided to start logging my miles on the site as well. As far as my PRs, I didn’t mention them because they are pretty pathetic (I am a hippo after all).

From marion on Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 07:53:22

Don't worry about the PR's being "too slow". While there are some pretty darn speedy runners on this blog, there are quite a few of us "regular" folk ;) The best part about recording your PR's, is that the runners on this blog cheer you on like crazy when you blast through one :D

Good luck- and from one hippo to another- I have found chocolate a lot tastier than dwarfs! (unfortunatly)

Last night, I told myself that I was going to the Jordan River Parkway at 5:00am and running 15 miles. Wrong! Instead, I woke up at 8:00am. After getting the kids up and feeding them, it was already 8:30am. I didn't make it to JRP until 9:00am, when it was already blistering hot. I only had seven really, really slow miles in me today.  What kept me going was the thought that with gas costing what it does these days, I needed to put in at least five miles to justify the 20 mile drive to JRP.

I am VERY impressed that you can run at all pushing a double stroller. In my best shape I could only force myself to do 2 with them. I should steal your blog name..I'm the real plodding hippo right now...(I'm 6 months pregnant)...gave me a good laugh though...

Welcome to the blog! I laughed when I read that article you have for your picture. Who is your hubby?

Great run in the heat! You are really doing great!

From walter on Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 23:26:14

Welcome to the blog. I had a hard fought out run tonight on the JPT at 4:30 pm and I did 8 miles but I wanted to do 10. Too hot for that! Note to self, stay away from circus' in Northern Thailand! lol that is funny!

From Jasro on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:40:05

Good run. As your husband, I have to let everybody know that you look nothing like a "plodding hippo." You have had a great summer regaining your base fitness. I think if you can keep it going through the winter you will see some PRs next year. (=

From sarah on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:26:59

I think we all guessed that but I'm sure it's great to hear it from you the hubby!!

From Tracy1 on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 00:23:16

Thats impressive that you did make it the heat! I loved your reasoning and motivation to keep running with the gas prices! It was great having omelettes with you and the family on the 24th!

So-so run. When will I learn that it is not a good idea to have a Crown Burger for dinner the night before a run . . . Ahh, but they are so tasty.

I feel your pain! Those burgers are the best! I try to save the "crap" for after the long run and the day before the rest day ;) Long run day is the day I get all the food "itches" out ;D Sometimes I eat WAY to much on long run day... too many itches!

3.5 is perfectly respectable!! You go girl!

I ran four miles on the treadmill.  Last week was a really bad week.  Everyday, I created an excuse not to run (too hot, too tired, too full, too hungry).  I am realizing that I am a morning runner.  If I don't get my run out of the way before 7:00am, it's not happening.

I ran on the treadmill during the day. I am trying really hard to be consistent. This year, my goal is to run to help me lose the weight I gained after having my second child. Not having a specific race as a goal makes it difficult to find the motivation to run. What is also frustrating is that I was hoping that by August, I would be down to my pre-pregnancy weight (not even close). I'm at that point in my running where I am not fit enought to enjoy running. Right now, running hurts---it's not fun. All I can do is try to remember why I loved running and how good it felt to be fit. The great thing is that Fall is around the corner and I LOVE running during the Fall.

Oh deary- I feel your pain :) Hey, how about running the Provo half with me next spring?

You are doing great! Babies are great, but the weight they leave behind (on out behinds :) is a little disheartening. Hang in there, it will fall off ;) Oh, and for a little help, me and my friend Kim have decided that the pain we feel running is the fat screaming as our muscles devour it :D How's that for a visual? Die fat die!!!

I ran four slooooow miles on the treadmill.  I was surprised at how much fitness I lost.  I fell of the running wagon during the last few weeks, but I am trying to get back on.  After losing a few pounds, I started telling myself that it was okay to miss a run.  Before I knew it, I cut my runs from five to six a week to one or two a week.  I also started telling myself that, since I lost a few pounds, it was okay to start eating fast food again.  Here I am now---slower and plumper than I was one month ago.  I had a heart-to-heart with myself today and have renewed my commitment to get fit and faster.  If I don't, I will have to change my blog name from Plodding Hippo to Waddling Walrus.

Glad to see you back in action!! :) Hey I am going to steel the Waddling Walrus! I love alliteration! My last name is McClellan. I put m2(squared) on everything that is mine. I mostly love it cause most people don't get it. You can do it!! and now that school is in- things will settle in to a bit more of a routine :D

I am very new to this site, i acutally just started my blog about a half hour ago, i think to actually put off running.... Anyway, your blog post struck a cord with me, i usually think along the same lines. Its okay to fall off every once in a while, as long as you get back on...and 4 miles is awesome! I hope to get to 4 miles someday! :)

How many shorties do you fit in the jogger and does it KILL you? I haven't drug out the jogger since my baby was born (2.5 years) I am going to try it very shortly.

I’m back from a long vacation from running.  After the DN 10K, I stopped running.  I am not sure why, but I did.  I started missing runs and before I knew it, even running a couple of miles became a struggle.  I am amazed at how quickly I lost all of my fitness.  Now, I am at a point where I can’t run without constantly taking walking breaks.

My plan is to build my base back up again this Fall/Winter.  Hopefully, next Spring, I will be in a position (fitness wise) to start training for St. George 2009 or some other Fall marathon.

During the last week, I started reading Sasha’s wife’s blog and it really inspired me.  I started thinking to myself, “wow, this woman is nine months pregnant, has a large family, yet she still manages to find the time and energy to run.”

Welcome back to running! I hope it is still going well. I feel your pain, though! I stopped running last year after the marathon for about 5-6 months, and it was hard to get going again! I vow to not let that happen this time, but it has been hard.

Sarah is very inspiring, that is for sure!

I met my friend Elizabeth early morning at SH Park for a run.  I was surprised at how great I felt during the run.  After we both took a long break from running, we decided to start meeting on Sunday mornings for a long run.  We are hoping to build our base this winter so that we are ready for next year’s running season.

Both of our husbands run on Saturday morning, so meeting Sunday morning will work out great.  After his Saturday long run, the last thing my husband wants to do is to watch two toddlers.  Last summer, I tried running after my husband finished his long run.  By the time he would get home, it was already blazing hot outside.  Needless to say, that set up did not last long.  I usually take my kids on Saturday mornings and push them in the jogger, but with winter around the corner, I don’t want to expose them to cold weather.  It is also not fun to push the jogger for more than four or five miles.

It was great to run with my friend.  She is also a mom with a million things on her plate.  It is so nice to run with another mom and talk about the chaos that comes when you are raising toddlers.  Not only did I feel great physically after the run, but I also felt great emotionally after venting about how hard it is to raise kids.  I hope that we can keep this up.

It's nice to have support when you're running. I thought I saw your name on the "Lost Sheep" category the other day, so it's good to see that you're blogging again!

I ran with my friend Elizabeth earlier today.  We ran in the SH area.  The weather was perfect for running today.  It was about 53 degrees when we started.

This week, I need to work on getting my weekday runs in.  I took my gym bag to work each day last week--that's a good start.  Maybe next week, I'll work on actually taking my running shoes and clothes out of the bag.  Who knows, maybe someday, I may acutally run.

Pushed the kids in the running jogger for three miles.  I've decided that I am not going to wear the Garmin anymore.  I want to run just for the pure enjoyment of running.  I don't want to worry about pace right now.  It seems that whenever I wear the Garmin, I run while staring at the darn gadget the entire time.

Overall, a good run.
